Why custom cards replaced the market kind

Weddings stopped being one event. If you’re getting married in 2026, you probably have separate cards for sangeet, mehendi, haldi, varmala, and reception. Five to seven pieces in one wedding, all needing to look like they belong together. A market card with a printed Ganesha on top can’t carry that whole story.

What couples ask for inside the design has changed too. It used to be motifs. Now it’s portraits, watercolours of the venue, illustrations of the family dog. A5 single-sheet cards

A flat A5 sheet on 300 GSM stock with event details on one side, family names on the other. Light, easy to courier, and somehow looks more expensive than the bulky cards. Good for banquet hall weddings, intimate ceremonies, or destination affairs where heavy invites would feel like overkill. A small caricature in the corner changes the whole feel. A5 cards with an envelope

The classic. Printed card, matching envelope, hand-delivered to relatives, and couriered to the rest. This is what most joint families default to when the guest list crosses 200, because per-piece cost is gentler at scale. Browse cards with envelopes.

Theme cards

One creative concept runs through the whole suite: Mughal, Rajasthani palace, beach, vintage Bombay, old Bollywood. Card, envelope, inserts, sometimes a matching trunk, all built around one visual idea. The sub-trend right now is the venue sketch, a watercolour of the actual haveli or palace printed on the front of the card. Our themed wedding cards are fully bespoke.

Passport invitation cards

Passport cards had their viral moment two years ago and haven’t slowed down. Shaped and bound like a real passport, with stamps inside and a boarding pass as the actual invite. Almost every destination wedding we work on picks this. NRI couples like it too, because a normal card gets bent in international transit, and a passport-shaped one slips into a courier sleeve clean. Caricature cards

The format I personally enjoy working on. The artist draws the bride and groom in a fun style that still looks unmistakably like the two of you. Send us two or three reference photos and the illustration comes back two or three rounds later. Guests photograph these. Without fail. Our caricature cards are A5 with the illustration as the hero.

Any vendor who gives you one price on the first call is either pricing the cheapest version or hiding something. Custom genuinely means custom. That said, most couples land in one of three tiers.

What moves the price is fairly predictable. Quantity drops per-card cost sharply at scale. Paper choice matters next, since handmade, vellum, satin, MDF, and acrylic all sit at very different price points. Inserts add up faster than couples expect. Foil and embossing take craftsmanship time with no real shortcut, and packaging is a tier of its own, because a simple envelope is in a different universe from a hard box or a hamper trunk. How to order from HWCS

Roughly two months end-to-end if you’re not rushing.

(1) Browse and shortlist two or three designs from the wedding card collection that feel close to what’s in your head. They don’t have to be perfect matches.

(3) Design conversation. Our team walks through wording, illustration, paper, inserts, and packaging with you over a week or two. You’ll see a digital proof before anything goes near a printer.

(4) Approval and proof. Read every name, every date, the function order, parents’ names spelled the way they appear on passports. Reprints from small errors are expensive. We’d rather you sit with the proof for two extra days than rush.

(5) Production. Customised wedding orders take 20 days at HWCS. Plan that into your calendar early.

(6) Delivery. Free across India on orders above ₹1,500. International courier for NRI orders, with extra lead time for customs.

A quick word on timing. Save-the-dates go out four to five months before the wedding. Cards should reach local guests six to eight weeks before the date, and ten weeks or more for guests flying in from abroad. Build a two-week buffer. There is always one more cousin who needs a card at the last minute.

Start the design conversation four to five months before your wedding date. Production at HWCS takes 20 days from final proof approval. You want printed cards in hand at least eight weeks before the wedding so you can post them to local guests six to eight weeks out and to international guests ten weeks or more ahead. Save-the-dates go even earlier if you’re sending them.
